The Graphs below show data from two waves buoys: Buoy 51101 which is approximately 273Nm North West of Waimea Bay (O’ahu) and Buoy 51201 (Waimea wave buoy approx. 4Nm off the coast).

The distance between the two buoys (51101 – 51201) is: 269Nm.

Station 51101- 24.321 N 162.058W

Station 51201 – 21.673 N 158.116 W

=269∕ 6
=44.8 Nm ∕ hrs (44.8kts)
= 940Nm ∕ day

Given these two data points in the ocean it can be shown that a substantial long wave period (Tp of 24- 27 seconds) swell event, travels approximately 900 – 1000 Nm a day.

Looking at the spikes for the Tp graphs, it took approx 6 hours from buoy 51101 to buoy 51201
